Organization: The Konmari Way

clothes on hangers

It's plain and simple, and unorganized life causes extra stress, period. I totally get it though, life happens. Whether it be kids, activities, or just being a busy working individual yourself there is always a little chaos in each of our lives. I am a little bit type A thanks to my great grandma, grandma, mom.... you get the point. I am not one for extreme organization, but getting yourself organized and staying that way really makes life more efficient. There is nothing worse than having too much stuff, and not enough space for it all. We have become a society of "instant" "faster" and "now" but what about taking a step back and simplifying your life to make it more enjoyable and less stressful?

My favorite organization method....... drumroll please...........

THE KONMARI METHOD

The Konmari Method is the Japanese art of de-cluttering and organizing your world by the one and only Marie Kondo. I already am in awe of the Japanese for MANY reasons, one of those being their tidy nature and healthy lifestyles (for the most part). When I found out about this awesome form of organization, I wanted to learn more instantly and apply it to my household immediately. You will most likely not regret getting your space clutter free, so check out the How To's and get organizing :)

This is a no excuse de-cluttering method that does not encourage that you get rid of as much as passible. The main idea behind this type of organizational method is simply to keep what makes you happy, and discard the rest. This can be a tough pill to swallow, as many times we hold onto things we think we may "need" in the future but they do not bring us any joy at all. The first time around trying out the Konmari method can be difficult, but trust me it gets better!

HOW TO:

  • Instead of starting in 1 room and moving, try starting by category such as "kitchen appliances" or "books." Once you grind down the items on category at a time you will notice the rooms becoming more and more tidy. The reason for doing this, is items tend to be strewn throughout the whole home and not just in their supposedly designated places.

  • When you are going through those items, ask yourself if it brings you joy or not and if it doesn't get rid of it immediately. There is no room to re-collect those items once you have decided to get rid of them, so be diligent in keeping your giveaway pile separated from eyesight before donation or throw away.

The Famous Fold

More famous than the method itself is the actual way to fold clothing the "Konmari" way. This space saving, wrinkle free way to fold your clothing will keep your clothes organized long term. Here is a great video to showcase the different folds:

Pants

Shirts

Socks

Happy Organizing!
